Hugh died of a series of strokes which started at least four years before death. He was bedridden for several years, and unable to speak for at least two years. Neva took care of him (and his sister Lela) at home. Owned Patten Brothers Drycleaners in Bellefontaine with his brother James from the 1920s to the late 1950s. One day he came home from the plant and told Neva they were going to quit business. She said alright, and started to state plans on selling the business or closing operations in an orderly manner. He replied, "No. I said now. Today." The shop never opened again.

Neva lived with her son James during the last few years of her life. However, she lived in her own house (509 N. Detroit St.) until about 1990. She was a professional whistler for some time in her younger years. She accompanied herself on the piano, although she had no formal piano training, and it is questionable whether or not she could read music. It is ironic, though, that her daughter Betty was an excellent pianist and taught piano for much of her adult life.

Hugh and Neva built their house at 509 North Detroit St. in Bellefontaine, Logan Co., OH. soon after they were married. Hugh's brother James and his wife built a house next door at 505 North Detroit St. After James died, his wife Helen continued to live in their house with her second husband (Dave Outland) until her death. Hugh and Neva's daughter Betty, her husband Harold Grimes, and their family lived around the corner from her parents and aunt & uncle until 1960, well after Patten Brothers Cleaners had closed.

Hugh and his brother James were quite close. They even had a common headstone for both couples in the Bellefontaine Cemetery.
