PictureAbout Aug 1970 Grimes, Ralph James with his children
Harold retired from USAF at Tech. Sergeant. Life Member American Legion Post #614, Hilliard, Ohio. He was a drycleaner, bookkeeper, and airplane mechanic (B-24). He died of heart failure from complications due to a doctor's error following bowel surgery. Also he was physically exhausted from taking care of Helen at home during her final illness.

He began work as a drycleaner at father-in-law's business in Bellefontaine, OH, and after Patten Brothers Drycleaners went out of business (see Hugh McVay Patten), he was a bookkeeper for a plumbing company in the Hilliard area. Several years later, he returned to drycleaning with Acme Cleaners in Columbus, and later Tremont Cleaners of Upper Arlington. He went to a drycleaning training school, but had no other post-high school education.

The family was living in Bellefontaine in 1948 per his mother Melvina's obituary. The family moved to 3434 Main St. in Hilliard in 1960.

Reportedly, the twins had names. Lois Kay Grimes thought there was a family Bible, but one has not been located as yet. The burial record for the one boy in Bellefontaine shows only "infant son of Harold Grimes", no name.

Not sure of birth date or place. was a laborer for John Paver, a widower in Allen Twp., during 1880 census. 1900 Soundex shows him born Aug. 1858. Shown living near father-in-law in 1910. Shown age 2 in 1860 census. Cause of death was a heart clot. Obituary says he came to Union Co., OH at age nine, which would mean they arrived in 1866, not 1869. However, most evidence points to arriving in Union County in 1869.

Not sure of birth place. One problem is that Rowlesburg did not exist as a town according to WV history until the early 1850s. Obituary lists birth place as Rosebury. Further investigation is needed, but there may be a "dead" town of that name or something similar in the southern portion of Preston Co., running over toward Taylor Co. following Big Sandy Creek. He died of Dropsy. He could not write. He is shown buried near son James H. in cemetery records, but no headstone exists. He was a farmer. Farm worth $200 in 1850 census. The family lived in the Fellowsville area in the 1860 census.

1850 WV census shows entire family living next to (listed next to) Elizabeth Howard, 55 and several of her children (see below). This may be Mary's family. They came from WV in 1869 because they were just "sick of the place" in WV, per Earl Grimes research (original information lost). Anecdotally, it was handed down that Henry never sold his land in WV. However, there is a deed of sale in the Taylor County, WV deed index for 53 acres to Adolphus Armstrong on 28 Dec 1868. This would be immediately before they would have come to Ohio, so it is possible that they did sell their land, and that it was in Taylor County, not Preston County. Note that Henry sold the land to the same person he bought it from almost exactly four years before.
