Cause of death was lung cancer. Fred ran a farm near Marysville (now part of the Honda facility site), but was forced to sell it when his barn burned down while they were at church, and he lost two prized Belgian work horses. Without them it would be difficult to succeed on the farm. He then drove a bus route between Columbus, OH and Fort Wayne, IN. He would stop to refuel each way in New Knoxville at a gas station owned by one of Arminta's relatives. She did their accounting books, and that is how they met. When the bus line shut down, he started a grocery in New Knoxville in 1929, which he ran for about three years. He then operated a grocery in Bellefontaine which he leased. His final illness forced him to give up the store shortly before his death, when he moved to New Knoxville, OH where his second wife was from, and where his son Dale had recently purchased a grocery.

Possibly spelled Arminta (which is how her stepson Dale pronounced it during my interview). She remarried a man by the last name of Thieman, which is the last name by which she is buried. The headstone is not yet found.

Dale purchased a grocery store at New Knoxville, OH in November of 1939, when he was still 17. He had enough high school credits to graduate, but because of the need to support his family (since his father was ill with cancer) he quit school and purchased the New Knoxville store at auction. Soon after this, his parents sold the Bellefontaine store and moved to New Knoxville, and he returned to high school at New Knoxville, where he met his future wife, Evelyn.

Dale is an excellent carpenter, to which he credits four years of Industrial Arts classes at Bellefontaine High School. In his retirement he has constructed, among other things, a canal boat replica and a wooden covered bridge, both of which are on display at a park in St. Mary's, OH.
