Death of George Coder

George Coder, one of the elderly citizens of Marysville, yielded to the inevitable end of mortality on Thursday, the 4th day of June, 1896. The measure of life was seventy-eight years, three months and six days. His birthplace and childhood were near Bainbridge, Ross County, Ohio, where he with his parents resided until 1834. In his sixteenth year they bid goodbye to the old home and sought a new one in what was then the far west, and settled in the woods near what is now Summersville, York Township. He remained with his father helping clean away the forest and aiding in the support of the family.

Mr. Coder drove the first team hitched to a wagon from what is now Marysville to their new home, which was a yoke of oxen in the rear and two horses in front.

October 28th, 1840, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Hamilton. Five children came to bless this union -- all living -- and present at the funeral. David McCormick, adopted at the age of two months, still resides at the old home. For fifty-five years the family were spared their father -- the first called -- an aged companion, five children, one adopted child, twenty-nine grandchildren, two brothers, three sisters, with a host of friends mourn their loss. Funeral at the Union church, Sunday, June 7th. Sermon by Rev. Haines, of Marysville, assisted by Revs. Carris, Shirk and Webb. Interment in adjoining cemetery.
