AREA MAN REPORTED KILLED IN VIETNAM
Army PFC George Bowersmith, reported in Friday's Journal-Tribune as missing in action in Vietnam, has been reported killed in action.
Charles Bowersmith, of near Raymond, received word Saturday his son had been killed Nov. 6 by gunshot wounds while fighting with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in the Central Highlands.
According to a news release, the Army battalion reported 20 men were killed and 27 wounded in the vicious battle where American spokesmen reported predictions of a major new Communist activity coming true.
The battle raged all night and until the next day at noon with "our rockets being launched so close at times by the helicopter ships it was feared they would hit our troops," an officer said.
Bowersmith went overseas in early June as a member of the Airborne unit, and had been wounded last July and then returned to active duty. In September he was hospitalized with malaria, his father said.
He attended Marysville High School. In addition to his father, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Evelyn Smale of Delaware.
The body is expected to arrive at the Postle-Hale Funeral Home within the next seven to 14 days. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
