COUNTY'S FIRST OF THIS YEAR

A flaming car-semi truck crash on Route 33 about five miles southeast of Marysville claimed the life of a Marysville man this morning in Union County's first traffic fatality of 1958.

According to the state patrolman who investigated, along with the Union County sherriff's department, William Grauman, 58, 626 E. Fourth St., Marysville, died shortly after being taken to Memorial Hospital here following the crash.

Grauman was driving his 1950 automobile towards Marysville on rt. 33 when he apparently swerved left of center, the investigating officer said, and collided head-on with a semi tractor and trailer.

The semi unit was being driven toward Columbus with a load of onions by Clark Glenn Nottingham, Stockbridge, Mich.

Nottingham told officers that he saw the car swerve toward his and he blinked his lights and sounded his horn but was unable to get his vehicle out of the way in time to avoid the collision.

The impact apparently ruptured the saddle tanks on the semi and it burst into flames almost immediately.

The Marysville fire department emergency squad was called to the scene and took Grauman to the local hospital where he died about a half hour later of a crushed chest and other injuries.

The truck driver was taken to the hospital by a passing motorist and was reported to be suffering from scalp lacerations and mild shock.

The auto was completely demolished and was towed to the Hornbeck garage here. The semi tractor was destroyed by the collision and fire and the trailer and cargo were partially damaged.

Another truck was to be sent from Columbus to transfer the remainder of the load as the wrecked truck was left at the scene for the time being.

The accident happened in front of the Charles Rausch farm, Marysville Rt. 2, and about 150 feet of wire fence on the farm were torn down by the accident, the patrolman said.

The Marysville fire department was called to the scene and remained for more than an hour.
