Nicholas has not been totally confirmed as the father of Harrison Shaw yet. However, it is easier to connect him for the time being so that he does not get lost, plus his family fits. He and his family were found by looking back to the 1830 census for Harford County, MD, since the Hutchins family was also from Harford County. Beyond that, the general age ranges fit well, which is a good sign. Much more investigation is needed before this generational connection is confirmed.

The census age ranges are wide for Nicholas, showing him born anywhere from 1780 to 1804. The range chosen for now is a slightly more likely one, with the expectation that it will end up being toward the older end of the range.

The 1820 census shows Nicholas as being engaged in manufacturing, not farming. The 1850 census lists him as being a farmer.

Nicholas's wife appears to be older than him, though her birth is listed anywhere from 1780 to 1804 as well. Most likely the younger listing is incorrect, and she was probably born between 1780-1790. Obviously, because of the census methods of 1840 and prior, we do not have a name for her as yet.

Since Nicholas Shaw is shown living with a Rebecca Watt in the 1850 census (most likely his daughter), it appears that his wife died before 1850.
